RAF Oldenburg

This photo was submitted as being RAF Wildenwrath but expert comments have eliminated that unit and some others. It is a former Luftwaffe control tower, maybe the presence of RAF Sabres and a Vampire help us get closer. The current favorite candidate is RAF Oldenburg but we will be glad to be proved wrong and even gladder (?) to learn the location. The squadron badge on the Sabre might be either 20 or 71 Squadrons?

One of our contributors has now found additional photo evidence confirming this is Oldenburg.

    1. Hi John
      Just wondering

My father LAC Cornwall was there in February 1953. He was in the 300 signals unit at Oldenburg.

      Did you know him
      Kind regards

      Simon Cornwall

  1. Im not sure that this Wildenrath. Its definetely an airfield in Germany. But, Wildenrath was one of the “clutch” bases and they were all post war builds. This airfield has the look of a wwii Luftwaffe base. Now I might be wrong, but as I said it doesnt look like Wildenrath to me, although I only ever visited the place twice.

    1. Richard, I think you’re right, its certainly a typical WW2 or even pre WW2 Luftwaffe tower and Wildenwrath was built in the early 1950s. I’ll leave the post up to see if we get any more comments that help identify the location whilst I look around. Its possible the person who identified it, did so based on the presence of one and maybe two Sabres. Two Sabre squadrons were based there for a while.

It doesn’t appear to be BRUGGEN, GATOW, CELLE, JEVER, GUTERSLOH or LUNEBURG – we have photos of those towers on here. Geilenkirchen is too modern. One (the only?) Sabre base that seems to qualify is Oldenburg and the squadron there converted onto Sabres from Vampires.
