St Athan

A Chubb Pathfinder apparently originally operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. FVS is possibly Fire Vehicle Services based in Gloucester (not far from St Athan) who maintain fire vehicles.

  1. The Pathfinder was on hire to DARA to provide fire cover at the correct category whilst a brand new Cobra 2 was purchased. This was at a time when St.Athan was indeed MOD and the Fire Section was DARA contracted and ran on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government. A mix of RAF and civilian Firefighters provided the cover. Strange times indeed.

  2. In the days of the cold war the RAF had a policy called “tone down”. Basically it involved all vehicles being painted green (and this included fire engines), but so they could be seen better on the airfield they had a yellow stripe painted along the side. For some reason the fire engines at St Athan were never painted green they remained red. In the mid eighties the RAF relaxed the policy on fire engines and they were all eventually repainted red. However that picture of the St Athan fire engines is very much post cold war!

    1. And Im curious about when the pictures were taken. The red fire engines look to me like MOD so Im guessing that the top picture is from RAF St Athan. But the yellow fire engine is very unusual for MOD so Im guessing that its a very recent addition.
