  1. Being pedantic it isnt a runway caravan. During wwii aerodromes had what was known as the “aerodrome control pilot” who could be any of the aircrew trades. The aerodrome pilot worked from a caravan, but when runway caravans as we know them today came in to use I dont know.

  2. I flew over these airfields many times on the way to the West of Shetland oilfields.
    Thanks to your post, I now know what happened there, all those years ago. My S-61N went tech with a flat battery at Flotta – fortunately not on Twatt!
    Would have been difficult to live that one down!
