SATCO Freddie Frost

HL2a On the occasion of his ‘QSY’, SATCO Freddie on the job at Lasham.  Fred was at Lasham 1993-2019, as SATCO from 2001-2016. Very rarely without a tie…

Now some sad news about Freddie. He passed away on Sunday 29th October 2023 aged 90. GATCO ran an article on Freddie in the Winter 2015 edition of Transmit and IFATCA also featured him in an edition of the Controller. Freddie held the accolade of being most probably the oldest practicing ATCO in the world, still controlling at 82 years of age at Lasham. He had been a continuous member of GATCO for over 65 years, he joined on 10th April 1958, quite an innings!

DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME…………….

Several of you have flagged the demise of the Lasham Decca 424 radar, having seen an advert for the aerial. Lashamofile Malcolm Hemming sent in the following to record the event.  “The Lasham Decca 424 head was decommissioned on Friday 12th February 2021. End of an era, possibly the longest serving radar in the UK”. Malcolm also has a video of the ‘toppling’!

    1. Very sad news about Freddie. I remember very happy times when Freddie used to visit us after his morning shift when I were a nipper. My Dad and Freddie were always in stitches as they recounted their ‘exploits’ at LATCC (Freddie) and Heathrow (Les West). When I first validated on the West End at LATCC (’82) Freddie used to ‘Chief’ on Sector 23 (the old Lands End/Berry Head sectors). It was an honour to know him.

  1. Sadly the Maintenance and Repair Organisation at Lasham (ATC Lasham Ltd) went into administration yesterday, 2 Oct 2015. The Company’s 424 might never turn again…probably the end of ‘Lasham Radar’ SRAs. SATCO Freddie Frost at 82 ends his illustrious Air Traffic career as probably the oldest valid ATCO in Western Europe, some sixty years after his first 424 SRAs at Eastleigh. Quite remarkable really…
