  1. Sea hawk on the left just lighting up with a cartridge start, and a Meteor F8 on the right, most likely one of the target towers of the resident TT Squadron. I spent my first 2 years of life at Sylt, where my father was based. Births were usually done at the British military hospital in Hamburg, and I was no exception, in 1956. The postings there were often on a punishment basis, but in fact it was a great place and most people really enjoyed there time on the island. After a collision between 2 resident display Vampires (fortunately without loss of life) the base display role was handed to the Meteor squadron who formed a 4 ship team. One of the leaders, known as pxxxhead Pete, was allegedly a couple of bottles of scotch a day drinker. He would often call, “rolling right, rolling right, go,” and then promptly roll to the left. You had to be on the ball to fly with that team. For some reason my father volunteered for the number 3 slot in the formation. The beaches were, and still are, stunning; really hot in summer, and, in those days, with the sea freezing in winter. These days, the tariff for accommodation is very expensive.
