For Air Training Corps summer camp in 1979 at Valley, I had the pleasure of sampling a back seat flight in a Hawk in a sortie where the instructor would normally fly solo accompanied by two student pilots in separate aircraft. As we strapped in, one of the other people helping me announced ‘command eject off’. This meant that if I inadvertantly pulled the ejector seat handle, only I would be ejected and the instructor would stay put!! It was a superb flight carried out in almost total radio silence, the first part consisted of close formation flying by the students with formation changes carried out by hand signals by the instructor; this was followed by a tailchase where I found out about the capabilites of a ‘g’ suit as we operated between +5.5g and -2.5g. It was rather outside the realm of being a mere civil ATCO but was very interesting.
