LWD0e  Clacton Sector  Suite 28 January 1971.

“Note the vertical ‘Shrimp Boat’ dispenser between the two gents on the left! The shrimp boats were small pointed pieces of perspex on which one wrote the callsign in chinagraph, and then pushed them alongside the primary target in the absence of SSR (à la Battle of Britain). One pulled out a tiny drawer to dispense them. One problem with the shrimp boats was that some of the early conference tubes were slightly domed, and the shrimp boats would sail away towards the ashtrays. Despite widespread use in the US they didn’t last long at all in Mediator…!

I note that this photo was taken before ‘O’ date, the nightshift commencing 1945 on 31 Jan 71, an interesting evening…”Malcolm Hemming

 stage halfLWD1

Here we have the LATCC stage half with the ATCO II ‘D-Men’ (and women..) and the ATCO IV/ATCA II strip-bashers. FPRS is over by the window on the left, AO/DO in the middle, and the FIR tucked in the corner. South Bank A- and D-sides on the left, North Bank D- and A-sides on the right. Looks like Pete Wyre on the Desk. Radar and Procedural were combined into the Mediator Stage 1 Ops Room at the start of the nightshift  (1945hrs) on the evening of 31 January 1971. A few radar controllers remained at SATCC ‘North Side’ just in case, and watched with interest, but only until ‘last orders’ in the Peggy Bedford.

This is Ted Gardner with Terry Thomas from LATCC (standing). Possibly  Ted was the first ATSA who qualified as a FISO to do FIR – confirmation awaited. It looks like an FIR position. Is this the award of a FISO certificate/licence? Is this the first FISO at LATCC or even anywhere. Answers please via the comments link at the top of this post.

Earlier than Jun 1970; when I first reported for duty as a trainee ATCA 3 in late March 1969; there was no sign of scaffolding and the Mediator Stage Half ops room (‘D’ and ‘A’ controllers only) was in operation with Stage 1 (adding radar controllers) opening on 1 Feb 1971.

The D and A controllers were still in the original ex RAF GCI building at Heathrow along with radar in 1965 when I visited courtesy of ‘Air Britain’ so somebody needs to fill the gap.

  2. I must have had a “Thanks a million clock” from a rogue batch, because it kept working for many years. I remember going up to the office to collect mine personally from the lovely Joyce Morley. Now there’s a story or two!

  3. Hello. With reference to the infamous ‘thanks a million’ clocks, (pic 33b)they were notoriously unreliable, in fact Mike Diggins MOR’d his when it failed to wake him before a morning duty! We suspected they were a job lot of old Argos stuff found in a skip, most of them were in the bin by the end of the week!

  4. Hello, I was wondering if anyone on here could help me please. I’m trying to workout where someone worked (am doing family history). His name was Cecil and he was born in 1919 in Falmouth in Cornwall and was an air traffic controller during the 1960s and 70s,I think it was at West Drayton that he worked but can’t be a 100 percent sure on that. He passed away in 1980, I was wondering if anyone on here knew him or know of a website were I could find out more information please. Thanks, kind regards Mike

Search this site using the word “seniority” or scroll down the posts on the right hand side looking for a post on Seniority lists. These list all the Civil Board of Trade controllers working in 1968. Is this a Mr Cecil or Cecil Dibble?

  7. Hi John,

Some excellent pictures here, take me back a bit.

Pictures LWD56 and LWD57 of Terry Thomas and Ted Gardner were taken in the FIR simulator in the training section at West Drayton. From memory Ted was the first of the assistants to validate and shows him being awarded his certificate by Terry.

I also have some pictures of my father Ray Pepall at taken at Uxbridge and Southern Centres plus some of my own. I can easily scan and send to you if they are of interest.

    Kind regards

    Mark Pepall

      1. I’ll get started on those John. I’m off to see my dad tomorrow, his 95th birthday. Sadly he has Alzheimer’s but I’ll show him some of the old pictures, his memory of sixty five years ago will probably be better than his memory of last week!
