ATCO No1 CADET COURSE Vers 11 09Sep22
These course photographs are mainly reproduced in numerical order. At the end of this post are some anonymous course photos. If you recognise yourself please let us know which course it is.
There are some older course photographs from the old School of ATC in the post on that unit. Click on the photos on that page to get a bigger version. You’ll find them here
As an ex Nine Course ATCO Cadet I’m exercising a sort of “droit du seigneur” to post that course first. The Nine Course photos are also unusual in that they are group photos taken at Marshalls of Cambridge in 1967 during our PPL training not the usual “all stood and sat in a group outside CATC” format.
This also a “Style” page – fashions through the ages, not just clothing but shoes, hairstyles and indeed facial hair.

Here’s a couple of photos of No8 Course from Mike Inglis. In the graduation photo, his brother-in-law, the late Campbell McAdam, is directly behind the lady in the front row with the white top. In the lower photo, he’s the tall one in the middle.
Looking at the top picture that looks like Leo Murphy just right of centre at the front and standing tall at the middle back is Dave Brown. I also think that’s Peter Metherall 4 rows back and 3 in from the right- atchistory

Front row L- R
Glen Bryant, Eric Pyrodgrotski ?, Dan Docwra, Bob Robinson, Keith Young, Cecilia Hamilton (married Womersley), Denny Johns ( married Bradbury), Mike Ingrouille, Les Allwood, Peter Marks, Robin Gunter, Brian Edwards.
Most, if not all are retired. Cecilia died and I believe Phil Lister, who left to fly may, also have died. Charles Duncan, Dan Docwra, Brian ? and myself did not make the finish line and I was the only one to remain in ATC. Claus went to Eurocontrol and Mike Ingrouille returned to his native Guernsey. Most finished up in the great LATCC MEDIATOR muddle and did nothing for over 12 months after completing the course. Denny became so disillusioned she married me and came to Luton in protest !! Bob Robinson and Arthur Budd were the stars and were posted to Heathrow.
(I think Claus Suttie subsequently instructed at CATC- atchistory)
Les Allwood says he believes the missing name is Brian Blackman. He was hospitalised after a serious car crash during our Aerodrome course, and was re-coursed onto 18, although he did not graduate.
By the time of our graduation in September 1972, we had acquired Lesley Austin (another car crash victim) and Pete Helier from 16 Course. We were the first course to graduate following the formation of the Civil Aviation Authority, and our licences were presented by Lord Boyd-Carpenter, the first chairman.
We had the “luck” to be the first course to be ear-marked for LATCC following the introduction of the Mediator system. A few escaped this fate – Arthur Budd to Heathrow, Pete Marks to Sopley Radar, Martin Strachan to Aberdeen, Jim Christie to ScATCC, Eric Pzygrotski (?) to Prestwick, Robin Gunter and Brian Edwards to Manchester and Bob Robinson to Eastern Radar. Those of us without friends in high places just resigned ourselves to strip-bashing at LATCC. As it turned out, the wait for radar training was not as long as we had feared.

1972 Direct Entry inc class to class Course
Malcolm Hemming reckons he can see the following gents:
Ken Hanley, Pete MacDermott, Malcolm Ferguson, Pete Humphrey, Derek King, Terry Thomas, Bob Trott, Mike Martin, Martin Alder, Brian Race (?) and Graham White…
Pete Humphrey and Derek King were a year ahead of me and I was on the November 1973 entry. I think Chris Bryan was on the course but Bob Trott I’m sure was 6 months ahead i.e. May 1972 along with Gerry McColl and maybe Mike Martin and Chris Clark. Brian Wildey
From Bob Trott, All Malc’s suggestions are correct, but Brian has a few things wrong.
There are a few other names I can add. It was a combination of ex RAF and Army non-comms, Royal Navy Officers, and some Class to Class individuals and I think started Sept 1972. Pete Terry, Tony McAndrew, Tony Burke, Chris Lewis, Bill Walker are some of those missing. It was quite a stir up of the CAA ATC admin at the time – all the Officers went to Airfields, all the remainder went to LATCC. Graham While was ex Merchant Navy who knew Ted van Dort from those days and got in touch when his Aerodrome famil was not to his liking (I think Inverness but certainly Scotland) and got it changed. Unfortunately, he had told me about the plan but it was myself his post was swapped with (mine was Farnborough) and after much management wrist wringing, it was changed back again!
Some extra names of the Non-State people have leapt out at me! Eric Gibson who went to Filton, John Haffendon who was Shoreham and I think eventually became SATCO and then Airport Manager there. There was another from jersey whose name has yet to surface.

Jeff Salter sent in this photo of Ian Douglas from 35 course. It was taken in the coffee room at the College at Bournemouth. It shows Ian with the prop of G-AYNG a PA 28 that he “modified” during our flying training at Carlisle. We went to the trouble of driving it all the way to Bournemouth with a view to donating it to the college to hang on the wall. (previous courses had left course mascots – mostly cuddly toys – which were displayed in cases ). For some unfathomable reason the College management refused it.! They said it did not comply with the ideals of ATC, or something like that. We thought it was much more relevant than a teddy bear!

Chris Kelly had been ‘attached’ to us since the start of the Technical Course. He was sponsored by the Isle of Man and wasn’t a NATS (CAA?) employee but followed our course, including the PPL. Can’t imagine that nowadays. Jim Creegan was doing a ‘cadetship’ to get a CAA licence having been an ATCO in Dublin, I think. He went on to ScATCC (as it was then).
In front of the course is a control tower populated by animals (gonks). The course nickname was ‘The Animals’ bestowed upon us by Mr HJ Tilly. He’d made the mistake of putting various stationery supplies at the front of the classroom (out in the huts) at the start of the Tech Course. He was almost crushed to death in the ensuing rush to claim them! ‘Animals, you’re all animals’ was the cry! This Tower was presented to us during our graduation by the instructors and was in a display cabinet in the old CATC. The shovel, used in The Golden Shovel award, presented to the APR Cadet who dug themselves the biggest hole during the week, was also at CATC up until they moved to CTC. I was its first recipient due to having 2 technical losses of separation BEFORE clocks on. The blade was spray painted gold and one of the more ‘arty’ members of the course used to write the names onto it!

The Ted Schaeffer archive
I’m very grateful to the Schaeffer family who passed to atchistory the collection of course photographs that belonged to Ted Schaeffer, and also to Ian Dennis who acted as the courier to get them to us.
I don’t have course number or date for this photo but is after the new building came available in the early 60s and before it was renamed the College. Ted Schaeffer is in the centre row, third from left and is that a young Alan Binning next to him. Centre in the front row is Frank Bulstrode, the Superintendent, and the right of him is Eric Parker. Thanks for the reprise of days gone by – quite a few names I know from my 4+ years touring PATCC/EGBB/LATCC/ScATCC before jumping ship to drive HM’s aircraft. Some will remember the RAF Liaison at CATC around 32 Cse time – Lloyd Brown. I bumped into him in Germany, I think at Celle, then kept in touch to find he joined the CAA at Hurn.

Thanks, Jeff (35 cadet course) for sending in the photo of Ian Douglas with his “trophy”! I remember this very well. He was the first one to be sent solo!! After lunch the CFI authorised a further consolidation sortie to do more circuits. It was a nice day and a few of us were sat outside the CSE accommodation as Ian turned final. Someone said “he’s a bit high”. I said “I hope he isn’t tempted to stuff the nose down”. Sure enough nose goes down – speed builds – into the flare, ballooned, stuff the nose down again, 2 bounces on the nose wheel then the inevitable! It’s such a shame the College didn’t allow it! where is it now? Phil Holt, 35 course

Course 18 – Phil Wildey sadly passed away on 31 July 2020 after a short illness.
LikeLiked by 1 person
This would be the Phil Wildey who went to Hong Kong from E Watch LATCC in the early 1980s. I last saw him at Hurn in the mid 1990s when I think he’d been working at Maastricht/Brussels as an ATC college instructor. He married a girl from Hurn in that era called Janet Bass. She used to work in the visual resources section at CATC. She was very arty, a lovely, pretty, confident woman. He bore a passing resemblance to a long haired Denham Elliot. I can remember him being on TMA South, sparking up a Dunhill International cigarrette, and asking for higher from the Dover controller. Always wheeler dealering on the radar was Phil.

Although I have only a vague recollection of the event, I notice that I appear in a photo from No 43 course. Strange, because I normally try to avoid such things like the plague. In the text it states ‘unit not known’ – not unreasonable, I guess, as I left operational ATC in the mid-90s, although still involved with aviation to this day.

Boy, this is scary! I was in Ipswich last week and thinking about the old aerodrome (now a housing estate), “Skip” who ran the accommodation and food, the fire engine that need periodic starting to ensure it would work in an emergency, Ray MacKenzie-Blyth (CFI), and the resident Lapwing squadrons that looked more like Mafia hitmen (Luigi birds as they became known) as they stood into the wind.

Regarding No 34 course. I was on it !! Only being non State (Jersey ATC) we were not included on the course photo. I remember being told we would not be included on the “official” photo!
Out of interest I ended up before leaving ATC, offshore, initially with Harry Hockney on Brent and then as SATCO on Ninian Central for a short time. I’ve some photos on my website in the gallery.

Can’t remember all the crew out on Ninian but there was Dave “Hatchback” Mobbs, ? Chamberlin, Brian Warrender and as I was leaving Chris Fitch.

@atchistory, I will and there’s other stuff too. While past retirement age I’ve just been made redundant!! The plan is to wade through photos I took while living in Jersey and those I took on the North Sea. Have some great pictures of CI Airways, Aurigny and the old DC3s GAMPY, GAKNB etc. Sadly with many moves over the years much of my archive has been damaged one way or another. I’ll keep you posted.

The Brian ? on the far right is Brian Blackman, ex LATCC North Side ATCA II. Unfortunately, whilst on the Aerodrome course, he lost the sight of one eye in a car crash which, at that early stage of his training meant the end for his ambition to be an ATCO. He left aviation and the last I heard a couple of years later was that he had gonet into the retail trade.
