The tower is preserved as a memorial to the 100TH BG (H), USAAF, Eight Airforce.

RAF Thorpe Abbotts

dated 1945 nice to see the signal mast in use.

A black ball 60 centimetres in diameter suspended from a mast signifies that the directions of take off and landing are not necessarily the same. If displayed with a white cross in the signal square it indicated parachute dropping was in progress and aircraft ground movements were prohibited. Airborne movements were only allowed at range and altitude, which doesn’t match the warning conveyed by the pyramid?

The pyramid was yellow and six feet long. It indicated a standard beam approach landing was in progress.

  1. Brilliant place been going there for many years.some of the personal stories are incredible.best museum for the 8th air force in East anglia. Although agriculture has reclaimed most of the airfield (rightly of course). It remains a brilliant memorial to them all.i used to see some other veterans there back in the 90s
