  1. RAF Eye was home to the 490th Bomb Group of the US Eighth Air Force 1944-45. Firstly with B-24 Liberators and then with B-17 Flying Fortresses. One of the latter is shown in this photo, plus a Dodge that is towing the checkered control caravan. The latter has a B-17G nose piece on its roof for observation during bad weather. Interesting to see what appears to be two females (?) sitting on top of the control caravan.


    1. Hi Malcolm, I’d assumed they were American Red Cross girls, many of whom were locally recruited in the UK, the donut dollies/club mobile girls serving coffee and donuts to crews. There are photos of them wearing white blouses/shirts and dark slacks. The left hand figure is more unusual though in that it seems to be wearing a WAC cap and a darker blouse.
