I hope this is being preserved because this airfield was where the first Britsh jet powered aircraft, the Gloster E28/39s were built and there is evidence to show that the first of these aircraft actually got airborne here on 1000yd paved runway at least one occasion while ‘engine testing’ prior to being transported by road to Cranwell for its ‘official’ first flight.
    Amusingly, one of the spectators at Cranwell saw it get airborne (no paved runway; that was laid later) and said ‘it flies, it flies’ whereupon Whittle turned to him and said ‘course it bloody flies, that’s what it’s supposed to do’!
