USAAF ATC Training

Dave Smith sent in this photo believed to be taken in the 1940s. The USAAF (later USAFE) has provided some ATC in the UK ever since 1942. Dave says that “Judging by the aircraft markings, it dates from 1942 but could have been still in use long after that. Apart from the obvious B-25s, there are quite a few types but not high enough res to identify all of them them. I can make out P-38s, an Airacobra, P-51s and a couple of Wildcats. It would seem that the runway-in-use is just being changed to 23. Interesting that the USAAF was using such designators and brought them over to the UK, eventually sparking an overall change from the RAF’s not very intuitive numbering system from north.”
