Address Selective Surveillance Radar

An improved Secondary Surveillance Radar system that was designed in the 1980s to overcome many of the then defects in SSR. ADSEL was developed by Cossor Electronics Limited working in conjunction with the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) and the Civil Aviation Authority.

  1. The first photo is of Richard Lewsey who along with myself Jim Kirkhope, programmed the ADSEL prototype for Cossor. The system ran on dual PDP11’s connected using one of digitals first Unibus connectors. Despite the change in transponderr message format mid-project we still managed to beat the US team in getting the prototype live.
